Sand im Getriebe is an action alliance of various climate and mobility policy groups and individuals and was founded in early 2019. We see ourselves as part of the global movement for climate justice.

On September 15, 2019 and September 10, 2021, we successfully blocked the International Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main and Munich. By doing so, we protested against the destruction of climate, environment and quality of life by the car-fixated transport policy as well as the strong political influence of the car lobby. At the same time, the action helped to anchor the topic ‚mobility (turnaround)‘ in the climate debate.

We advocate for a radical change in traffic – not someday, but now. Our goal is car-free cities, much more space for walking and cycling, and massively expanded and free local transport. The construction of freeways, expressways and federal highways must be stopped immediately, and the funds freed up must be used to expand climate-friendly mobility infrastructure.

The automotive industry is in a state of upheaval. Digitalization (‚Industry 4.0‘) as well as the shift to electric motors will eliminate a large part of today’s jobs. In this situation, it cannot be a question of keeping an outdated, oversized and resource-guzzling industry alive for a few more years. Instead, a controlled process of downsizing and converting the car industry must begin now.

As part of a conversion, production must be switched to climate compatible means of transport such as streetcars, electric buses and vans or cargo bikes. This process must be organized jointly with the employees, and the social security of all those affected must be guaranteed. Stuttgart is the new Ruhr area – can we manage the ecological transformation?

We also refer to the ‚Immediate Climate Justice Program‘, which was developed by people from the climate justice movement at the end of 2019.
